The thieves are intelligent and patient and expect the best opportunity to attack. An unattended home while their owners are on vacation is a primary goal. One only has to imagine that returning home from a fantastic family vacation can find that the house or property has been assaulted. You cannot allow this unfortunate situation to happen!

Create activity around the house

A family member or neighbor can be asked to feed their pets or water their plants while they are away. They will be able to make sure that no one has entered and can check the windows and locks on the doors of the house. In addition, these regular visits will create activity that will alert anyone who may be watching the house as a potential target.

Securing doors and windows

This may seem obvious but thieves have access to homes through a door or a window without security. It is easy to forget a rarely used window or entrance. You have to check everything, even the windows of the second or third floor that can be thought inaccessible. So, you must also check the operation of all locks to ensure they are in good working order. In the case of windows and sliding doors, adding a wooden bar to the sliding space is a good idea.

Do not forget the garage door

Most homes have automatic mechanisms in the garage door and although they keep the door firmly closed, they are not safe when leaving the house. Some old units can be broken using a long lever on the garage door or using a long wire inserted through the seal to release the bolts. This should be avoided during the holidays by adding a simple bolt to one of the latches or along the doorway to prevent any movement of it.

Four

Securing or hiding valuables A great way to limit loss in the event of a robbery is to store small valuables such as jewelry, electronics and cash in a safe. Criminals do not want to spend too much time in a house, they want to get in and out. They will bring valuables that are more accessible and do not usually take the time to try to open a safe. In case you do not have a safe, you can at least hide small valuables instead of leaving them in sight.

Stop the mail

If you are going to be out for more than a day or two, you can call the post office and stop the mail. A pile of mail on a porch or overflow mailbox is a sure sign of an unattended home. You also have to make sure that you are not expecting any package of deliveries from online shopping sites that can be left on the porch. The criminals know the buying habits and will look for packages that are not collected immediately.
